Ogdensburg Department of Public Works director retires after 15 years of service; city seeks applicants for job

OGDENSBURG – Longtime Ogdensburg Department of Public Works Director Kit Smith has retired.

Ogdensburg City Manager John Pinkerton said Smith officially retired Jan. 31. He said finding suitable a replacement for Smith, who served as director for approximately 15 years, could be a difficult task.

“Kit has a long service to the city had did and outstanding job,” Pinkerton said. “His shoes will not be easy to fill and he will be missed.”

Pinkerton did not comment as to why Smith retired.

The city has posted the now open position on its website.

Anyone interested in applying for the position must complete a civil service application, which are available at the city clerk’s office or online at http://www.ogdensburg.org/DocumentView.aspx?DID=533.

The salary range is $57,677 to $77,518.

Minimum qualifications are:

• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in civil or mechanical engineering and eight years of street construction, or related large scale construction, or municipal public works experience, three years of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity; or

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and twelve years of street construction, large-scale construction or municipal public works experience, at least three years of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on March 28.
