OGDENSBURG -- City council Monday will likely renew its support for repeal of the New York SAFE Act at its Monday meeting.

The city passed a similar resolution in Feb. of 2013, stating that the SAFE Act, which places various restricts on gun owners, is unconstitutional.

“The Second Amendment of the United States provides for the right of the people to keep and bear arms as a natural right which is a necessity for the security of a free state, and further states that this right’ shall not be infringed,” the resolution says.

The resolution also sites the SAFE Acts potential to hurt the economy of the greater Ogdensburg area.

“The lawful ownership of firearms is a recreational benefit to our residents through hunting and target shooting, along with an economic and environmental benefit to our region with several locally owned and operated gun/sporting businesses,” the resolution says. “The New York State Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (NYSAFE Act) of 2013 which was rushed to passage by the New York State Senate, Assembly and Governor, will have a detrimental effect on law-abiding hunters, sportsmen and gun owners, creating a hostile environment both for them and for the sale and manufacture of legal firearms and ammunition.”

The resolution notes ongoing efforts by state lawmakers to repeal the act and pledges the city’s support to those efforts.

St. Lawrence County recently passed a similar resolution calling on the state to repeal the SAFE Act.

City council is expected to discuss the resolution Monday at City Hall. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
