OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg will again compete for a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant, according to an update from the city manager.

The $100 million funding pool is awarded equally to just ten municipalities throughout the state with each of the ten regions competing for the massive grant.

Many officials throughout the state have been critical of the Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s competition style grant funding process, which has been referred to as the “Hunger Games” by some.

Last year the grant went to the City of Plattsburgh, where officials are still working on exactly how to spend $10 million prize.

City Manager Sarah Purdy recently attended a New York Conference of Mayors meeting where the grant was discussed.

She said the awards are to be invested in transformative housing, economic development, transportation and community projects that will attract and retain residents, visitors and businesses.

That’s good news for the former industrial city of Ogdensburg, which is now riddled with vacant and remediated properties along its waterfront.

“The deadline for applications was not announced, but I have already consulted with our City Planner to begin identifying the elements of a proposal from Ogdensburg,” Purdy said in an update to the council.

Last year’s plan focused largely on the city’s waterfront property an encompassed the Maple City Trail.
