OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg City Councilor William Hosmer will not seek a second term on the city council.

In a release issued Tuesday morning, Hosmer said he expecting children and needs to focus on his family.

“It is with little reservation that I am announcing that I will not seek reelection as an Ogdensburg City Councilor in November. Despite receiving hundreds of calls and visitors trying to convince me otherwise, it is time for me to step aside and focus my energies on my family,” he said. “Family is the most important thing in my life and my wife and I are expecting our first children this spring. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving the community as an elected official and I can promise you that Maureen and I will continue on with our volunteer efforts to help make this community a better place and someday I plan to return to public office.”

Hosmer said he is proud of what he accomplished in his single term.

“Three years ago, I set forth on a journey to help Ogdensburg change the path that it was on. Over that time I feel as if we have accomplished that goal and I am more optimistic about the future of our community than I ever have been before,” he said. “The City has experienced the opening of several small businesses, the expansion of several existing businesses, and the completion of the Diamond National property cleanup.

Hosmer said he is also pleased that the city may reclaim vacant property at the psychiatric center, which could put some prime real estate back on the tax roll. Hosmer also credited city staff from making those achievements possible.

“While council sets policy and direction, it is the city staff that needs to take credit for the many accomplishments over the last several years. It is the staff that we have in place that gives me the confidence that the city will continue down this new direction as I step away,” he said. “Many times the staff does not get the credit they deserve for their efforts and as I walk away I want to thank every one of the cities employees for their efforts. “

Hosmer said he appreciated all of the support he received during his campaign and as a councilor.

“As I step away I want to thank every citizen for letting me represent you, I am truly humbled by the support that I have received from this community and I leave you with this thought … Do not dwell on past mistakes, nor the decisions that have led us to where we are, but let us come together as a community to fix our future.”
