OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg City Council is hoping to remove asbestos and market the former St. Joseph’s Nursing home with help from two grants.
On Monday, councilors agreed to apply for a $50,000 grant from the St. Lawrence River Valley Redevelopment Agency to help clean up the facility.
Ogdensburg is also seeking a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for cleanup of the former nursing home in hopes of spurring economic development by making the building more marketable.
City manager John Pinkerton said there are two potential buyers for the property, but finalizing a sale will be more likely if the city can get the asbestos removed.
Engineering estimates have suggested cleanup would cost roughly $250,000.
Ogdensburg officials are hoping to two grants would cover the full remediation project.
Council will discuss the resolution Monday at City Hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
