Ogdensburg City Council to hold hearing on sale of small land parcel near boat launch

OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg City Council will consider the sale of a small parcel of land near the Paterson Street boat launch Jan. 24.

Council discussed the 72-foot by 90-foot property Monday at the regular meeting. Because the parcel is a non-conforming lot, its sale is limited to adjacent landowners.

The city is considering selling the property with a starting price of $1,700.

While the council unanimously agreed to hold a public hearing on the matter, Deputy Mayor Michael Morley said he would not be likely to support the sale.

He said the property functions as overflow parking for the boat launch, which is often crowded during fishing tournaments.

Councilor David Price also expressed some reservations regarding the property sale. He said it’s likely that waterfront area near Paterson will be more developed in the future and the parcel could serve as a space for concessions or a judge’s stand during tournaments.

Department of Public Works Director Scott Thornhill said the property currently requires maintenance, and offers limited use due to its size. He said staff has weighed the pros and cons of the sale and recommends selling it.

Councilor Jennifer Stevenson said she favors selling the property. She said it’s possible a use may become available at a future date, but the city has been working to get properties back on the tax roll and should continue that effort.

The hearing regarding the sale will be held Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at city hall.
