Ogdensburg City Council to discuss resolution to participate in committee to implement recently completed Blueway Trail plan

OGDENSBURG - Ogdensburg City Council will consider a resolution Thursday to participate in the committee aimed at implementing the recently completed Blueway Trail plan.

The Oswegatchie River Blueway Trail Management Plan is a strategy for economic development and sustainable tourism through recreational access to the Oswegatchie River and the many other year-round recreation resources along the river corridor.

As one of the communities that helped establish the plan, Ogdensburg is able to appoint one member and two alternates to the committee that will work toward implementing it.

According to the plan, the Blueway Trail holds promise of economic development opportunities. If Blueway attractions increase tourism in St. Lawrence County by just one percent, an additional $1.15 million would be added to the economy, the plan says. One percent would support $440,000 in wages and generate almost $140,000 in local and state taxes.

The committee will be responsible for:

• Advance activities to implement the recommendations of the Oswegatchie River Blueway Trail Plan;

• Establish, review, and update priority actions for protecting and enhancing the Oswegatchie River and revitalizing its waterfront communities;

• Identify funding priorities for consideration by members when applying for grants and other financial assistance;

• Facilitate coordination of members efforts, sharing of information, and increased education of and among Committee members, to protect and enhance the Oswegatchie River;

• Approve an annual work plan and budget for the Committee;

• Convene an annual forum for the purpose of reviewing past accomplishments and discussing actions needed to further protection and enhancement of the Oswegatchie River and Blueway Trail;

• Adopt bylaws and procedures for the conduct of business, as necessary.

Ogdensburg City Council will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
