OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg City Council agreed Monday to pursue a $200,000 brownfield cleanup grant to remove asbestos and other hazardous materials at the former St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.

The city also intends to demolish the building.

The total project cost is estimated at $350,000. The city has also been awarded a National grid Grant for 24 percent of the project cost up to $300,000 that can be applied to match the brownfield grant.

City Planner Andrea Smith said staff has determined that demolition of and abatement of the building will make it more marketable to developers.

Deputy Mayor Michael Morley asked if there was still interest from the Canadian developer who shared his plan to turn the building into an entertainment center, but City Comptroller Phil Cosmo said there had been no updates regarding that plan.

Councilor William Hosmer suggested the weak Canadian dollar may have played a role in that decision.

The council agreed to pursue the grant unanimously.
