OGDENSBURG -- City council will suspend brush pickup for the first three weeks of October in order to reduce unplanned expenditures.

Council on Monday voted 5-0 in favor of the measure after City Manager Sarah Purdy proposed the idea, which was supported by Department of Public Works Director Scott Thornhill.

Thornhill said the idea was to reduce unplanned overtime expenses. He explained that fall pickup would begin Oct. 23, which would only a leave a period of three weeks without pickup.

Councilor Daniel Skamperle was hesitant to support the measure at first, asking several questions of Thornhill, but eventually sided in favor of the proposal in order to save the city some money as budget season approaches.

The city will start the fall pickup program on Monday, Oct. 23 in the Second Ward and move easterly towards the Proctor Avenue area. The city will make two or three complete passes through during the pickup process.

The discussion prompted questions from councilor Brian Mitchel regarding the city’s landfill. Thornhill told him the landfill is available for city residents to use by request.

The last day for the public to put out green waste for pickup is Sunday, Nov. 19, and the last day of pickup is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 22.
