Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority seeking $2 million Department of Transportation grant for bridge structural repairs

OGDENSBURG – The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority is seeking a $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant for structural repairs and painting on the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge as part of a larger maintenance program.

The authority has applied for funds from the U.S. DOT’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) competitive grant program to assist with bridge rehabilitation.

The bridge project, which includes approaches and the mile-and-a half span across the St. Lawrence River into Canada, is undergoing a multi-stage plan, with the most recent repairs and improvements completed in 2013.

The TIGER application seeks $2 million to match $2 million in OPBA funds to make structural repairs to deteriorated areas of the bridge’s structural steel and to replace the original lead-based paint with a new three-coat zinc paint system, which is intended to slow the progression of deterioration of the structural steel.

The goal, according to the OBPA, is to preserve the bridge’s superstructure for the next major stage of repairs and improvements.

The bridge was opened in 1960.

The open steel grid deck has some broken welds and fatigue cracking, and the approach floorbeams are showing deterioration and section loss, and both are in need of replacement, OBPA has noted. The magnitude and extent of the structural deficiencies and deterioration has been identified during several NYSDOT biennial inspections.

Work on this project will include the removal of 135,200 square feet of open steel grid deck along with all underlying floorbeams, employing temporary bridge closures to do the work.

New galvanized floorbeams and 171,600 square feet of galvanized open steel grid deck will be installed as part of the rehabilitation. The four-rail steel bridge railing and posts installed during the main span rehabilitation will be temporarily removed, stored, and reset as the work progresses each day. Steel conduits for utilities will be maintained and reconnected to the new floorbeams.

OBPA officials say the project will eliminate substandard safety walk and sidewalks from the remainder of the bridge, and will involve minor reconstruction of the land approaches to enable the wider 30-foot roadway to transition into the customs plazas on both ends.
