Ogdensburg AmVets Ladies Auxiliary planning to help veterans with ramps, car repairs, other issues

OGDENSBURG -- AmVets Post 19 Ladies Auxiliary will be using funds generated during a recent “Salute To Veterans” show to assist a needy veteran.

Post Americanism Officer Linda Hurteau says that the local ladies’ project will be known as “Help a Veteran.” Auxiliary President Charlene Romano said, “Our auxiliary has raised funds to really be of help to a veteran in need -- whether it’s to help fix a car, build a ramp for a handicapped veteran, buy a storm door or whatever any local veteran may need and cannot afford. Our goal is to work directly with a repair shop, contractor, or carpenter and to pay for the necessary supplies and the labor, if need be.”

To qualify for the completely free one-time assistance, the veteran must write a letter to the Auxiliary, telling what is needed and why they cannot afford the expense. It must be something that will directly benefit the veteran, but the letter can be written by a family member, friend or neighbor -- just be certain the veteran is willing to participate before adding his or her name to the letter. Include the veteran’s name, address and phone number, and the letter writer’s same information.

A committee will look over the letters and decide what they can do to help.

Letters can be submitted immediately. They will be accepted through Aug. 1.

They should be mailed to J. Brabaw, Secretary, AmVets Post 19 Ladies Auxiliary, 310 Albany Ave., Ogdensburg, NY 13669. Do not call or send info to the post quarters.
