OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg International Airport is conducting a training exercise on and around airport grounds from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, local law enforcement, fire, and rescue agencies are participating in the exercise. The exercise will not affect flight operations, but the public may notice simulated smoke and numerous emergency vehicles around the airport.

“The overall goal of this, and any exercise, is to test lines of communication and improve response and recovery operations,” explains Airport Manager Patrick Sharrow.

“It is difficult to train and be ready to confront the unthinkable. This is exactly what all of our firefighters, police, airfield operations officers, and other emergency response and support personnel do when preparing for a major incident.”

Simulated crash victims will be transported to Claxton-Hepburn and other hospitals including Massena Memorial Hospital, River Hospital, Clifton-Fine Hospital, Gouverneur Hospital, and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. It is hoped that the training exercise will provide the opportunity for all agencies to test their capacity in the event of an actual emergency.

This exercise satisfies Federal and Local emergency preparedness requirements. It will test the airport’s emergency plan for mutual aid response, the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting unit and local emergency responders as they to train together in a multi-agency response.
