MASSENA -- Village police say they arrested a state parolee and two other people who were allegedly in the middle of harvesting 80 ounces of marijuana at a Grove Street residence on Thursday. They also allegedly possessed a small quantity of heroin.

Jason S. Smith, 36, of 54 Grove St., Craig A Shorette, 32, of 49 Howard St. and Patience M. Dissottle, 22, of 532 Elliot Rd., Norwood are all charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Smith and Shorette were each arraigned in Massena court and are being held at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton without bail. Dissottle is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.

According to a statement from parole officer Jose Valentine, he and village police were conducing what he called a "pre-delinquent home visit" at Smith's house.

Massena police Lt. Mark LaBrake said the smell of marijuana was so strong, officers could smell it in the street as soon as they stepped from their vehicles.

Police knocked and Dissottle opened the door and after being questioned by police as to Smith's whereabouts, she told them he was hiding in the attic. Once police went inside, Officer Cody Wilson said they discovered multiple marijuana plants hanging to dry and a small amount of heroin.

Smith is on parole for a 2008 conviction for fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. He was granted parole from Ulster Correctional Facility on May 5. It was his fourth prison term.

Shorette is being held without bail because of prior felonies. He was released from Franklin Correctional Facility on March 30, 2012 after serving about 3 years for tampering with physical evidence.
