POTSDAM – An “Occupy Wall Street” (dubbed "Occupy Elm Street") demonstration has been called for downtown Potsdam on Saturday.
The “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations in New York City’s financial district have inspired similar demonstrations elsewhere in the U.S. and around the world.
The general theme of the protests is aimed at greed and the wealthiest one percent of Americans who are characterized as not contributing their fair share to society, particularly in light of the difficulty of so many unemployed and poor people.
A notice on Occupy Together on Meetup.com calls on students from SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University to converge on Elm Street at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.
According to the site, this location was picked because it's where the village's major banks are located.
