MASSENA -- The New York Power Authority (NYPA) says conditions on the St. Lawrence River are scheduled to change beginning Sunday at 3 p.m. when water will be released from the Long Sault Dam.
The release of water will “assist in maintaining the International Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Board’s (ILOSLRB) planned river flow while several turbine generators are out of service for maintenance at the Robert Moses Power Dam,” NYPA said in a news release.
The spilling will not increase the overall planned river flow.
The release of water from Long Sault Dam could potentially take place through Oct. 27.
Environment Canada and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be making water flow measurements by boat in the Cornwall area from Oct. 15 to Oct. 18. Work will take place downstream from the Moses-Saunders generating station and on the U.S. side in the spillway.
NYPA’s news release said members of the public should:
• Use caution on the river
• Keep back a minimum of 800 ft. from the Long Sault Dam spillway and Robert Moses Power Dam, both on the upstream and downstream side
• Be aware of changing river conditions and strong currents
The International Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Board (ILOSLRB) establishes outflows from Lake Ontario weekly. The board, in conjunction with its staff, continues to monitor and reassess conditions on an ongoing basis. Information on hydrologic conditions, water levels and outflows are available on the Board’s website and posted to the Board’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/InternationalLakeOntarioStLawrenceRiverBoard (English).
