NORWOOD -- The Norwood Village Green Concert Series (NVGCS) set a record with its 'pass the bucket' collection during its 43rd annual season which concluded with a performance from the legendary Donna the Buffalo band Aug. 7.

“Although drought is not a good thing, the lack of rain regarding our season was a positive,” Joseph M. Liotta, Founder of the NVGCS said in a prepared statement.

The series signature “pass the bucket” garnered $14,614.23, surpassing last year’s record of $12,278.49. The three top “pass the bucket” events were The Gibson Brothers ($4,374.80 – a record breaker in itself), Donna the Buffalo ($2,2470), and Tom Chapin ($940.50). The average “pass the bucket” was $860 for 17 events.

“Ironically this is being written during a downpour,” he said. “Another positive was the programming itself. The programming included a MacArthur Genius award recipient, a three time Grammy award winner, two world-music groups, one of America’s most awarded bluegrass bands, one of the country’s greatest acoustic ensembles, a group that came complete with its own herd, world-class drummers galore, and some of our areas finest musicians. It was a total package of widely diverse and culturally rich music, dance, and dancing offerings.”

Attendance was strong and steady averaging 1,247 for each of the 17 events.

Included in this attendance were 650 elementary students from Norwood-Norfolk, Madrid-Waddington, and Potsdam Central Schools. Two hundred students from Herman-DeKalb, Massena, Potsdam, Canton, Edwards-Knox and Lisbon Central Schools provided some of the performances, and workshops and performances were included for Crane Youth Music campers.

The most attended concerts were the Gibson Brothers with 4,500 people, Donna the Buffalo with 3,458 and 2,098 for a concert with Tom Chapin. Total attendance for the 17-event season was 21,207.

In addition to the pass the bucket there were individual restricted donations including a $5000 donation to support Michelle Dorrance’s Dorrance Dance, and $10,000 to support the Donna the Buffalo concert. This donation included some discretionary support.

There was $1,598 given to replace the monitor system with 3 self-powered speakers that are used in conjunction with the 2 self-powered speakers the series already owned. Another $585 was restricted for band shell maintenance and cleaning.

The series received 3 specific grants, one from the St, Lawrence River Valley Redevelopment Agency in the amount of $5,902 to complete its new lighting system, another $2,500 from the Sweetgrass Foundation in support of its acoustic music presentations, and the third, $1,000 from National Grid in support of its youth music programming.

Finally in the realm of private and individual support the series received $21,045 in checks of $25 or more from individuals, businesses, and organizations. The series fiscal year ends on August 31st and checks are still welcome and being received for this purpose. Checks may be made payable to the Norwood Village Green Concert Series, 3 Bicknell Street, Norwood, NY 13668

The series has received a total of $61,244.23 from the private sector for its 43rd annual season so far.
