Daniel Eng of Norwood, a junior at St. Lawrence University, has been elected as director of the university’s Emergency Medical Services for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Eng is a certified emergency medical technician and has worked for the St. Lawrence campus and for Potsdam Rescue Service.

The EMS is a student-run and state certified EMS agency. The service provides basic life support first response services to the St. Lawrence University campus and surrounding area.

As an affiliate of the St. Lawrence University Safety and Security Department, EMS is composed of 25 members, all of whom are undergraduate students at St. Lawrence.

In addition to providing coverage to the campus 24-hours a day during the academic year, EMS also provides standby services at campus events.

The director of EMS serves a number of important roles. As the public information officer for EMS, the director is responsible for interacting with the state Department of Health, state and local oversight bodies, the university administration and the safety and security department.

The director also works with other local EMS agencies, such as Canton and Potsdam Rescue, to ensure the best possible service is delivered to the patients.

Eng is a full time college student and a certified emergency medical technician. He has also earned several other medical certifications, including the basic life support instructor certification.

Eng created a new fund raising program on campus in which he, with the help of other EMS staff, taught CPR/first aid to students and faculty in return for donations toward the EMS program.

Eng is a pre-med major at St. Lawrence University and wishes to continue his education at Clarkson University in the Physicians Assistants Program.

Eng graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School and is the son of Theresa Eng of Norwood, New York.
