NORWOOD -- Republican Donald Trump won at Norwood-Norfolk Central School on Tuesday as students from kindergarten through 12th grade took part in a mock election.

Trump received 446 votes, with second place going to Democrat Hillary Clinton with 307 votes. Third party candidate Jill Stein of the Green Party garnered 74 votes while Libertarian Gary Johnson received 68.

Students also had the chance to weigh in on races for the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. For the Senate, Republican Wendy Long bested Democrat Chuck Schumer 328-282, and in the House of Representatives race, incumbent Republican Elise Stefanik won with 345 votes, Democratic candidate Mike Derrick had 211 and Green Party Candidate Matt Funiciello got 81.

Students in 11th and 12th grade social studies classes assisted with the election as poll workers. The event was coordinated by social studies teacher Daniel Sullivan-Catlin.

The mock election produced both a popular vote total and simulated the Electoral College.

Classrooms were each assigned a state, and students’ votes were sorted by state. The results of those individual state votes resulted in electoral votes being assigned based on the actual number of electoral votes awarded to each state.

When the state-by-state results were tallied, Donald Trump was the winner with 338 electoral votes. Hillary Clinton was awarded 182 electoral votes, and Jill Stein won two states for 18 electoral votes.
