Norwood-Norfolk Angel Tree Program receives donation of 134 mittens

NORWOOD -- The Norwood-Norfolk Central School Angel Tree Program, coordinated by the school, teachers and community members to help needy families every year during the holidays, recently received a donation of 134 pairs of mittens.

Both local knitters and some from the Syracuse area donated the mittens. Angela (Bishop) Mann, a 1996 NNCS alumnus, organizes the mitten project and her Syracuse-area knitters donated 109 pair of the mittens this year, said Robert Haggett who has knitted and contributed many mittens to the project over the years.

“Keep in mind that 99 percent of these knitters do not know where NNCS is,” said Haggett, referring to the Syracuse-area volunteers.

“One out of five students at NNCS are at poverty level. These knitters do this project with a very caring heart.”

The NNCS Angel Tree Program arranges for food, clothing and toys to be delivered to poor families living in the district each year.

Haggett noted the project was placed on Facebook last year and last summer Mann received two pair of mittens from a California knitter who just wanted to be a part of the project.

At NNCS, kindergarten teacher Trina Sheena is a very active member for the project, Haggett noted.
