POTSDAM – Village police say they caught up with a man reportedly driving erratically after he left a beer retailer with a 30-pack of beer.
Stanley E. Stephenson, 39, of Norwood, has been charged with a violation of Leandra’s Law, driving while intoxicated with children in the vehicle, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and unlicensed operation.
Police said a citizen called them to report a vehicle weaving along Lawrence Avenue. The citizen called 911 and followed the vehicle to CJ’s on Market Street, where the citizen allegedly saw Stephenson come out with a 30-pack of Busch beer. The caller also said there were several children in the vehicle.
Police patrols arrived and stopped the suspect vehicle. Police report they believed the driver to be intoxicated, and to not have a valid driver’s license.
Police said the front passenger was 29-year-old Melanie Stone, while her three children, a four-month-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a 7-year-old girl, were in the back seat of the vehicle.
Stephenson was found to have a blood alcohol content of .11 percent. He was arraigned in Potsdam Village Court in front of Justice Garner and held on $2,000 cash or $4,000 bond.
Further charges of endangering the welfare of the children are pending against Melanie Stone.
