Pete LePage doing what he loved

NORWOOD -- Norwood Beach will be dedicated Tuesday, Aug. 18 to Donald F. “Pete” LePage, a longtime recreation enthusiast and organizer who died last year.

The ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. at the beach on Lake Shore Drive, before the final 2015 Norwood Duathlon.

LePage was Norwood’s recreation director and youth commissioner for years. One of the founders of the duathlon, he was an avid biker and runner, the two sports that make up the duathlon challenges.

LePage died last August at age 79 while competing in a duathlon in Ogdensburg.

“Most of what people see at the beach now is due to Pete’s work,” said Norwood Village Trustee Mike Zagrobelny.

Zagrobelny said Mike Knowlton donated the sign dedicating the site to LePage, and J.C. Merriman, Inc. donated the materials.

Registration for the summer’s final Norwood Duathlon is at the beach at 5:45 p.m. The race starts at 6:30 p.m. The race includes a 1.5-mile run, an 8-mile bike ride and a 1.5-mile run.

Individual and team registrations are accepted. Racers under 18 must have parental consent. The cost is $5 per race or $15 for the series.

Proceeds go to the John C. Purvis Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors. The race will only be cancelled in the event of a thunderstorm.
