North Country This Week

North Country This Week is rolling out a “new look” designed to make the paper easier to read and give it a more contemporary appearance.

The Massena-Ogdensburg edition that hit the streets on Friday is the first edition with a new nameplate at the top of the front page. The first Potsdam-Canton edition featuring the complete redesign will be delivered Tuesday and Wednesday.

The redesign is the culmination of a months-long, carefully researched project in which we engaged respected newspaper design consultant Ed Henninger.

Over the past several months, the paper has introduced larger, more varied headlines, bigger photos, more readable typefaces, new graphic elements and a new, inviting format for our day-by-day calendar listings.

The goal is to “upgrade the typefaces to something more readable” and to make the paper “stand out visually, to make it more contemporary,” said Henninger.

The new nameplate – the newspaper’s name -- will always appear in green and black. Green was selected to “capture the sense” of the North Country.

Associate Editor Jimmy Lawton led the redesign process and Special Projects Editor Adam Atkinson created the new day-by-day “Calendar” format that appeared earlier this summer.

The sections of the paper have also been repackaged to make it easier for readers to find the information they are looking for:

• “Newswatch” now begins on page A2 to highlight our increasingly comprehensive news coverage of St. Lawrence County.

• “North Country Opinion” will always follow “Newswatch” and includes our robust “letters” section as well as “Sound Off” and occasional photos. Later this year, a staff-written column will debut as well.

• “What’s Going On” begins on the front page of Section B and highlights the many activities, concerts and events taking place in St. Lawrence County. The day-by-day calendar rounds out the section.

• “North Country People” generally appears after “What’s Going On” and features photos and stories about your neighbors, co-workers, friends and acquaintances.

The weekly business page and frequent special sections will continue as before. Most weeks, employment ads will appear at the back of one section while real estate, automotive and classified advertising will run at the back of the other section.

“I was impressed with the participation and proactive approach of management and staff at NCTW,” said Henninger.

He has redesigned hundreds of newspapers in the U.S., Canada and Europe and visited the North Country This Week office earlier this month to help implement the new design.
