Four area residents who plan to attend or continue college next fall have each received $500 North Country This Week scholarships.

They are Bethany Gilbert of Potsdam, Lindsey A. Flanagan of Canton, of Norwood-Norfolk Central School and Carrie Anne Potter of Potsdam.

To be considered for the “Community Service Award” scholarships, students must plan to attend college in the North Country, majoring in health care, criminal justice, education, politics, communication or some other community service-oriented occupation. Children of parents who work for North Country This Week are also eligible for the scholarships.

Gilbert, who graduated from Potsdam Central High School on Friday, was president of the PCS Red Cross Club and led and participated in many community service projects, including school blood drives, Holiday Mail for Heroes, International Measles Initiative, Rotary Wheel Chair Challenge, and other humanitarian missions. In June, she completed the college-level Allied Health Program at Seaway Tech.

She has been accepted into the Clarkson University Pre-Physician Assistant Program and will enroll there in the fall with plans to continue to work in and for her community. Bethany is the daughter of Kim and Kevin Gilbert.

She has raised money for Adirondack for Kids, participated in a 5k for Fobare Fruits and helped with school fund-raisers. She has helped the elementary physical education teacher with his classes during the school day and babysits for a Down Syndrome boy after school. She has been a part of the softball and volleyball teams throughout her high school career and holds a part-time job after school and on weekends.

She will attend St. Lawrence University this fall. Although undecided on a major, her interests include nursing, counseling and human development as well as general studies in education and psychology.

Hadzovic is the daughter of Alketa and Cena Hadzovic of Norfolk.

She will be attending St Lawrence University in the fall, majoring in biology. In high school, she has taken all of the upper level science, math and honors classes. Her is grade point average is 93.51.

Potter is the daughter of Warren and Caroline Potter of Potsdam. She is a Potsdam High School graduate and recently completed her freshman year at SUNY Geneseo, where she majors in English literature. Potter is active in her college orchestra, and helped produce the undergraduate literary journal “Gandy Dancer” this spring.

She is an employee of her college library and works at Kinney Drugs when she is home. After graduation, Potter plans to pursue a master’s degree in her major and hopes to work in publishing.
