Season dates and updated regulations for the 2015-16 waterfowl hunting season in the North Country have been finalized by federal wildlife officials and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Most duck season dates are similar to last year, but there are some changes to daily bag limits.
The daily limit for canvasbacks has been increased from one bird per day to two based on above-average breeding population and nesting conditions this spring. Possession limits for all ducks are three times the daily bag limit.
Duck hunting seasons begin this year with designated youth waterfowl hunts. In the Northeastern Zone, it is the weekend of Sept. 19 and 20. Junior hunters 12 to 15 years old must be accompanied by a licensed adult hunter. Other restrictions apply.
The daily bag limit for ducks and brant during the youth hunts is the same as during the regular season.
September Canada goose seasons runs Sept. 1 to Sept. 25 in the Northeastern Zone; regular seasons run from Oct. 24 to Nov. 15 and Nov. 17 to Dec. 13. The bag limit is 15 a day in September and three per day the rest of the time.
“This year’s season selections were developed by a team of statewide DEC biologists, with input from waterfowl hunters,” said Acting Commissioner Marc Gerstman. “DEC has looked to task forces to help select waterfowl hunting season dates for more than a decade and appreciates all the help they have offered to help make these selections.”
