North Country state Sen. Griffo named to leadership post in Senate

New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, has been named to a top-tier leadership position in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan recently named Griffo to the post of Assistant Senate Majority Whip.

Griffo’s district includes a swath running through the middle of St. Lawrence County, from Massena to Fine, including Potsdam.

“This position will enable Griffo to play an important and influential role in monitoring the progress of legislation and helping to secure votes in support of proposed legislation, while also continuing to take part in the development and implementation of policy,” a press release from the senator’s office said.

Griffo also serves as chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, and sits on eight other committees including Finance, the most senior committee in the Senate.

“Senator Griffo is a valuable, well-respected and hard-working member of the Senate Republican Majority, and a trusted voice for the Mohawk Valley and Upstate New York,” Flanagan said. “In this new position, he will work closely with the members of the Republican conference and me to ensure we can move our agenda forward during the budget and legislative session so we can make New York a more affordable state in which to live and work, and improve the quality-of-life for each of our residents."

Flanagan said Griffo’s ability to respect differences of opinion and find common ground among those he may disagree with will serve Griffo well in the position, the speaker said.

The position includes a $19,000 stipend, which will be added to his regular base pay of $79,500. He will no longer get the stipend he had received as chair of the Energy Committee.
