North Country snowmobile operators warned of early season hazards

Posted

With winter well underway in Northern New York, the New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) is warning snowmobile riders of potential hazards associated with early season conditions.

The entire state has been experiencing extremely high winds this week and the added snow can cause freshly fallen snow to cover many potential hazards. Riders must also be cautious of early season conditions, including unfrozen water and mud holes beneath the new snow, and all riders are urged to be extra cautious, especially in low-lying areas and on bodies of water.

NYSSA also reminds snowmobilers throughout the state that local trails are not open until the local club has inspected and officially declared trails open for the 2016 season.

“With an annual impact of $868 million to the New York State economy, the snowmobile industry is ready to begin another season of winter fun,” said Dominic Jacangelo, Executive Director of NYSSA. “At NYSSA, we work with local municipalities and land owners to provide the best riding opportunities for our members. We want to remind members can register their sled online, making it easier to ride immediately.”

“When each season begins, we always want to keep snowmobilers informed of the necessary safety precautions that need to be taken before hitting the trails for the first time,” said Jim Rolf, Trail Coordinator of NYSSA. “Riders are responsible for being cautious while riding, looking ahead for such instances where a trail could be blocked, until club volunteers can get out to remove the hazards and replace any missing sign posts.”

NYSSA encourages snowmobilers to contact their local snowmobile club before their first ride for trail safety updates in order to ensure a safe experience, as trail conditions do change. NYSSA recommends reporting any trail issues to the local club immediately.
