North Country Sen. Griffo asked but says he won’t seek 22nd Congressional District seat

North Country Sen. Joseph Griffo says he will not run for 22nd Congressional District, despite requests from party members local and national.

Griffo represents the 47th State Senate District, which runs through the middle of St. Lawrence County, from Massena to Fine, including Potsdam.

He said that in the wake of an announcement by Republican Congressman Richard Hanna that he would not seek re-election, he was asked urged to fill the role.

“The call to public service is one that has defined my life for years. It is this civic desire that has driven me to play an active role in the growth and prosperity of our communities, first as Mayor of the City of Rome, then as Oneida County Executive and now as New York State Senator,” he said. “Through it all, I’ve always had one ultimate goal in mind: To know that I’m doing everything I can to help improve people’s lives and make our region a better place to live.”

Griffo said that while he was appreciative of the offer, he decided against it.

“So when Congressman Richard Hanna announced last month that he was not seeking reelection, the political and patriotic allure of serving our nation in Congress could not be ignored. After all, we are the greatest country in the world, despite the flurry of personal and political attacks that daily criticize our elected officials and our way of governing. Then to be approached by so many people – from across this state and nationally – encouraging me to serve at the federal level, left me feeling truly amazed, flattered and humbled,” he said. “But at this stage in my life, a decision of such magnitude cannot be made without much consideration. By weighing this opportunity personally, professionally and politically, I considered my responsibilities to my family and my current job as State Senator – a duty I truly enjoy, and one I continue to be honored to serve. Many thoughtful and eye-opening conversations with my family and friends, as well as colleagues and professional people I respect in both the public and private sectors, helped further put into perspective my commitment to public service.”

Griffo says he will instead continue his efforts at the state level.

“I believe I have been a very effective voice as State Senator, accomplishing much good for the communities I serve. Yet, as I envision the challenges that lie ahead for the future growth of our region, I believe my experience, my wisdom and my trusted relationships across all levels of government put me in the best position in my current capacity to continue building upon the accomplishments and momentum we’ve already achieved,” he said. Accordingly, I do not intend to enter the Congressional race in the 22nd District.
