The North County Prenatal/Perinatal Council has been awarded $110,000 for Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) maternal health care services in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties.
The money is part of a total of $4.3 million distributed statewide by Hunger Solutions New York, which manages NOEP in the state.
The primary goal of NOEP is outreach to people who are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with education and application assistance, according to Hunger Solutions.
In addition, efforts are made to raise awareness and expand the number of children participating in the School Breakfast Program and the Summer Food Service Program.
“Last year across the state, NOEP helped more than 32,100 households receive SNAP benefits and put food on the table for themselves and their families,” said Linda Bopp, executive director of Hunger Solutions New York.
For every $5 spent on groceries using SNAP, Hunger Solutions estimates $10 is brought into local economies helping to strengthen small businesses, local grocers, and New York’s farmers.
Last year, more than $79 million SNAP dollars were spent in communities throughout the state due to NOEP efforts.
To reach a NOEP counselor, people can reach the North County Prenatal/Perinatal Council, 200 Washington Street, Suite 300, Watertown, at 788-8533, 800-279-8679, the NCPPC on Facebook.
