North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is opposed to President Donald Trump’s immigration suspension.
Trump on Friday signed an executive order banning immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen. The order suspends all refugee admission for 120 days and bans Syrian refugees indefinitely.
“Our first role as the federal government is to protect our national security and I believe we need to work in Congress to reform and strengthen our visa vetting process. However, I oppose President Trump's rushed and overly broad Executive Order,” Stefanik wrote on her Facebook page on Sunday. “On the House Armed Services Committee, I have advocated for Iraqi and Afghans who have served side by side as our allies to be prioritized to access visas. It is Congress' role to write our immigration laws and I strongly urge the President to work with Congress moving forward as we reform our immigration system to strengthen our homeland security.”
Trump’s initial order also banned those with permanent resident status, commonly called green card holders, but that part has since been rescinded.
In addition to calling it unconstitutional, critics of the immigration ban have noted that it does not include several predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East where the Trump organization has done business.
