Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa, was among a majority of Assembly members that on Tuesday voted on a bill to protect domestic violence victims.
Russell said the legislation prohibits employers and landlords from discriminating against victims of domestic violence and requires cellphone companies to allow victims to opt out of shared or family plans without incurring penalties. Additionally, a pilot program will be established allowing victims to electronically file petitions for temporary orders of protection.
"One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime," Russell said. "That is unacceptable and cannot be ignored. I helped pass legislation that will offer victims resources for recovery and hold their abusers accountable. The physical and emotional damage victims face is daunting, but they should know that they are not alone. By passing these bills, the Assembly continues its commitment of providing protection, support, and justice."
Russell’s 116th Assembly District includes all St. Lawrence County communities along the St. Lawrence River, plus Canton and Potsdam.
