North Country Assemblywoman praises late Potsdam mayor as ‘trailblazing’

North Country Assemblywoman Addie A.E. Jenne, D-Theresa, has praised late Potsdam Mayor Ruth Garner as “a legend” and a “trailblazing” public servant.

Garner, who was still a village trustee at 101 years old, died Wednesday at her home. She will be buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery after a Mass of Christian Burial Monday.

“The North Country lost a legend today with the passing of former Potsdam Mayor Ruth Garner, who was still serving on the village board at the time of her death,” said Jene in a statement Wednesday after Garner’s death was announced.

“It is somewhat fitting we mourn Mayor Garner's passing in the same year we are marking the 100th anniversary of women being granted the right to vote in New York State.,” said Jenne, a Democrat from Theresa.

“She knew the importance of public service and demonstrated that with her lifetime commitment to her community. She loved the village, and her pride in Potsdam and her birthplace in Norwood was undeniable,” she said.

“As I reflect on her life and service, she was a trailblazing force, a woman leader, a trusted public official and, most importantly, a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

“She leaves a beautiful legacy, and I extend my condolences to her family.”
