North Country Assemblyman says Democrats ‘killed’ Second Amendment rights by failing to repeal SAFE Act

Assemblyman Marc Butler, R-Newport, says his colleagues in the Democratic Party have killed Second Amendment rights by stalling a bill that would have fully repealed the SAFE Act in committees.

The controversial New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement act of 2013 was passed quickly in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Conn.

While the SAFE Act has support in the New York City area, it is widely opposed in the more rural parts of New York. Legislators in St. Lawrence County have widley opposed the act, going as far as to pass resolutions stating such.

The bill bans the sale of assault rifles and requires registration for those who already own them. It also limits magazine size, requires background checks for purchases and mandates all sales to go through a licenses arm dealer.

Butler says Assembly Democrats had a chance “to restore New Yorker’s Second Amendment Rights.”

“Once again, Assembly Democrats use the committee process to continue to allow our Second Amendment rights to be trampled on by the governor’s gun-grab SAFE Act. A bill that would fully repeal the SAFE Act was killed in the Assembly Codes Committee, which is dominated by progressive Democrats. It is shameful that they will not allow such an important bill to come to the floor for a vote.”

Butler’s 118th Assembly District includes St. Lawrence County towns from Norfolk and Madrid south to Colton, Clifton and Fine.
