NORFOLK -- State police say they are still investigating a March accident involving a state trooper that left a Brasher woman seriously injured, but no new details are available.

On March 2 two people were hospitalized following an accident in Norfolk involving Trooper Leah G. Malbeuf, 25, and Cathy A. Ashlaw, 60, of Brasher.

To date, no charges have been filed for either driver and no details on the investigation have been available since March 3, and state police say it could still be some time before any information is released

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations is handling the accident with help from the Collision Reconstruction Unit.

State police say that although this accident involved a trooper, it is handled the same way any other case that requires a State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

According to state police it will likely be another month before a completed report from the Collision Reconstruction Unit is submitted to Albany. After that it will be reviewed by investigators, meaning it could still be a long while before any answers regarding the accident are revealed.

“The Collision Reconstruction Unit's reports and investigations are generally much more detailed than the simple accident report,” a state police spokesperson said. “The review process for reports done by the CRU is also extensive and very time consuming.”

According to police, trooper Malbeuf, was traveling northwest on County Route 49, and a 2008 Toyota Matrix, operated by Ashlaw, of Brasher was traveling northeast on County Route 38.

Trooper Malbeuf's vehicle struck Ashlaw's vehicle at the intersection of County Route 49 and County Route 38, according to the initial investigation, state police said.

Ashlaw was transferred to University of Vermont Medical Center after first being taken to Massena Memorial Hospital by Norfolk Rescue, for injuries that were not described in the state police account.

Trooper Malbeuf was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Norfolk Rescue for injuries she sustained in the accident.
