The Northern New York Community Foundation is administering the new Gary J. Berry Creativity Award, to be given each year to a graduating high school senior or non-traditional student in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Lewis county pursuing an education in mechanics, agriculture or technology.

The first recipient will be chosen this summer.

The award was established to honor the memory of Gary J. Berry, an Adams resident and co-owner of Berry Bros. Lumber Company.

Applicants with strong involvement or interest in their local fire department are encouraged to apply, as well as students who are participating in BOCES programs.

Gary Berry was very engaged in community activities, including with the Woodville Congregational Church and the Smithville Fire Department.

“It means a lot to have such a great man be remembered through this scholarship,” a statement from the Berry family said.

The Community Foundation is accepting tax-deductible contributions for the Berry Award Fund. Checks can be made payable to the Northern New York Community Foundation, 120 Washington St., Suite 400, Watertown, New York, 13601. Place “Gary J. Berry Creativity Award Fund” in the memo line.
