Ninth Democrat joins field looking to unseat North Country Rep. Stefanik

An oncologist from Saratoga Springs has jumped into the crowded field of Democrats lining up to see if one of them can unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Dr. David Mastrianni announced Tuesday that he is entering the Democratic primary for the 21st Congressional District of New York.

“The 21st Congressional District is a unique area with remarkable people,” said Mastrianni. “At times our Federal Government does not acknowledge the issues of rural or small-town areas such as our District. Many federal policies favor large corporations and other similar interests over our people and our communities,” Mastrianni said in his announcement statement. “We can help our region by addressing issues such as healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, education and the environment,” he said.

Mastrianni will be drawing on his medical expertise in the campaign.

“In healthcare we can strengthen Medicare by allowing it to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies, then expand it to cover all our citizens and secure the local hospitals which anchor our communities.”

He was raised in Saratoga Springs, and was the third generation of his family to be a physician in the area. He graduated from the Saratoga Springs public school system and enjoyed his teen years in the Adirondacks in the 1970s. Along with his wife, Nurse Practitioner Lucille Albergo, he opened an oncology practice in Saratoga Springs, and for 15 years, has served as the oncology consultant to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

“Dr. Mastrianni will offer the 21st Congressional District representation by a serious, experienced person from the region who has dealt with complex issues and understands our people,” a statement from his campaign said.

Mastrianni joins a platoon of Democratic candidates for the North Country congressional seat in the House of Representatives who began lining up last June to try to take the seat away from two-term incumbent Elise Stefanik of Willsboro.

Other Democrats hoping to make a good showing in the Democratic primary June 26 are Tedra Cobb of Canton, Patrick Nelson of Stillwater, Donald Boyajian of Cambridge, Ronald Kim of Queensbury, Tanya Boone of Granville, Emily Martz of Saranac Lake, Katie Wilson of Keene and Sara Idleman of Greenwich.
