Nine contests on ballot Tuesday for St. Lawrence County Legislature

Nine contests for seats on St. Lawrence County Legislature and a three-way bout for the county coroner’s office will be settled during elections on Nov. 4.

Voters in St. Lawrence County Legislature districts 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will decide contested races to represent those areas. Also up for election are county court judge, surrogate court judge and treasurer, all which are uncontested.

In Legislature District 1, which covers the western portion of the City of Ogdensburg, incumbent Democrat Vernon "Sam" Burns will contend for the seat with Republican Donald Hooper. Both reside in Ogdensburg.

District 2 incumbent Republican Mark Akins will not seek re-election. Republican David Forsythe is unopposed. Each lives in Lisbon. The district includes the eastern portion of Ogdensburg, plus the Town of Lisbon.

Joseph Lightfoot, the Republican representative for District 3, will run unopposed for a new term. He represents the Town of Oswegatchie, the Town and Village of Morristown and northwest portion of the Town of Canton, including the Village of Rensselaer Falls.

Republican Joel LaPierre of Gouverneur and Democrat Michele McQueer of Hammond will face off for the District 4 seat. Republican incumbent Alex McKinnon is not running. The district comprises the towns of Macomb, Rossie, Fowler, and Pitcairn, along with the towns and villages of Hammond and Edwards.

In District 5, Democrat incumbent Donald Peck will square off with Republican challenger Travis Dann. Both candidates reside in Gouverneur. Their district includes the towns of Gouverneur and DePeyster.

District 6 representative Frederick Morrill, a Democrat, will defend his seat against Republican Larry Denesha. Both are from DeKalb Junction. The district includes the towns of DeKalb, Russell, Fine and Clifton. It also includes the town of village of Hermon.

District 7 incumbent Republican Scott Sutherland is not running for a new term. Republican Jerry Moore and Democrat Rick Perkins, both of Potsdam, will battle it out for the seat. The district comprises the towns of Pierrepont, Parishville, Hopkinton, Clare, Colton, and Piercefield.

District 8 incumbent Kevin Acres, a Republican from Madrid, has no challenger. He represents Madrid, the western portion of the Town of Potsdam and the eastern and southern portion of the Town of Canton.

Republican Daniel Martin of Canton will run against District 9 incumbent Democrat Stephan Putman, also of Canton. The district covers the Village of Canton and a slice of the western part of the Town of Canton.

For the District 10 spot, Democrat incumbent Jim Bunstone will face Republican Joe Timmerman. Both reside in Potsdam. The district includes the Village of Potsdam.

In District 11, Republican Chad Colbert will take on Democrat Ryan Warr. Republican incumbent Daniel Parker is not running. The district includes the southeast part of the Town of Potsdam, plus all of Stockholm.

District 12 incumbent Jason Clark, a Democrat, will be challenged by Republican John Burke. They both live in Norfolk. The district includes Norfolk, the northern portion of the Town of Potsdam and the Village of Norwood.

In District 13, which covers all of Massena except for the village, plus the Towns of Brasher and Lawrence, Democrat incumbent Tony Arquiett of Helena will run unopposed.

District 14 is also uncontested. Gregory Paquin of Massena, the Democrat incumbent, represents most of the Village of Massena. The district covers all of the village south of the Grasse River and most of the eastern part of the village north of the Grasse River, except the so-called "Homecroft" area.

For District 15, incumbent Democrat Jonathan Putney of Lisbon is unopposed. He represents the so-called "West Massena" portion of the village, plus the town of Louisville and the Town and Village of Waddington.

There are three contenders for two county coroner positions. Incumbents James Sienkiewycz of Massena, a Democrat and Joseph White of Canton, a Republican are challenged by Republican Joseph Lacks of Gouverneur.

County Court Judge Jerry Richards, a Democrat, is up for a new term. He is unopposed.

There is a surrogate court judgeship up for election. The only one running for the spot is John Richey, a Democrat.

Republican incumbent County Treasurer Kevin Felt will run for his office unopposed.
