New York State Police say they have not cornered or captured two inmates who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility.

The announcement follows reports that the inmates were spotted near Cadyville, which lies between Plattsburgh and Dannemora.

Troopers say the search for escapees David Sweat and Richard Matt continues to be focused along State Route 374 in the town of Plattsburgh.

Route 374 will remain closed between General Leroy Manor Road and Rand Hill Road until the search has been completed.

As of Friday, more than 800 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies are assisting in this search.

The extra manpower is necessary to ensure that rest periods are being provided for the members. Officers and Forest Rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, as well as officers from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, FBI, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Clinton and Essex County Sheriff Departments and the Plattsburgh Police Department are all providing assistance in the search.

All available assets are being deployed around the clock, including K9 and aviation units. More than 700 leads have been developed at this point in the investigation.

Escapee Richard Matt, 48, is a white male, 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on his back “Mexico Forever”, a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a Marine Corps insignia on his right shoulder.

The other escapee, David Sweat, is 34 years old, a white male, 5’11” tall, 165 pounds, and has brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.

Troopers say the two escapees are very dangerous. They ask that the public make no hesitation to report any suspicious activity.

The public should make no hesitation to report any suspicious activity; that includes any sign of a trespass, burglary or vehicle larceny.
