WADDINGTON -- New York Power Authority says eggs in an osprey nest they moved in June have hatched.
“The effort began when NYPA staff noticed that osprey had built a nest on an unstable light pole near the ball field,” NYPA officials said in a prepared statement. “Fearing the pole could topple over, NYPA sought an exemption from the DEC to move the nest. DEC officials confirmed today the eggs had hatched after spotting the adult ospreys feeding at least one chick.”
They moved the nest from Whittaker Park June 17 in what the statement characterizes as a “dramatic rescue of two osprey eggs.”
Ospreys are a federally protected migratory bird whose nests cannot be removed if they are being used.
