New York’s 21st Congressional District, which includes St. Lawrence County, will be among the most important races in 2016, according to the College Democrats of New York.
The College Democrats says it will make winning back New York’s 21st Congressional seat, formerly held by Rep. Bill Owens and now held by Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, a top target for a Democratic takeover in the upcoming election cycle.
“It was an easy decision to make NY-21 one of our top priorities for 2016,” said Jamie Zieno, President of the College Democrats of New York. “College students are disappointed in our ‘millennial’ representative in the North Country, and we believe Mike Derrick makes this a competitive race.”
Mike Derrick, a native of Peru, served for 28 years in the U.S Army in both active and reserve forces. Frustrated with political interests in Washington, he pledged to make his campaign about “issues that directly impact middle class families in the North Country including education, job creation, farming, and income equality,” according to a news release.
The 21st Congressional District is represented by Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik. “In her short time in office, Congresswoman Stefanik has failed to vote in the interest of the millennials who she often claims to represent” said Emery Younger, St. Lawrence University student and College Democrat of New York Northern Region Chair. This week alone, Congresswoman Stefanik voted to postpone states’ compliance with the EPA’s Clean Power Plan demonstrating that she values the interests of oil and gas executives over the preservation of the Adirondack region.
“The students of the North Country need a voice in Washington that will support the long term interests of the region, rather than siding with one of our nation’s wealthiest sectors.”
Earlier this year, Rep. Stefanik also voted along party lines to freeze Pell Grants.
“Her out-of-touch record does not reflect the views of the residents of the 21st District and the College Democrats of New York are committed to winning back the seat.”
