New village administrator wearing two hats as search for code officer continues in Potsdam

POTSDAM – Village Administrator Gregory Thompson has begun his new job leading the municipality’s workforce but is still taking care of his duties as code enforcement officer while a search begins for a replacement.

“We are actively seeking a new code enforcement officer and will begin interviews as soon as we get back the canvass letters,” Thompson said.

Those letters have gone out to the top qualified candidates from the Civil Service list to see which of them are interested in the Potsdam job. If they don’t find a suitable candidate from the first batch, they will go back for more from the Civil Service list, which is maintained by the St. Lawrence County Human Services Department.

Meanwhile Thompson says he is getting help with the code enforcement job from Ken Alberts, “a really good code compliance technician, who is helping where he can.”

The previous administrator, Everett Basford, had been ready to leave the post for some time before the Board of Trustees announced Thompson’s appointment. But Basford had assured the board that he would stay and help get Thompson up to speed before he vacated the office.

“Everett left us in a very good spot. We couldn’t ask for more. And he left the door open to help, should I need it,” Thompson said.

“I’m very appreciative of what he did for us,” he said.
