New St. Lawrence Health System pediatrician in Canton

CANTON -- Emily Smith, MD, pediatrician, has joined the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System and is seeing patients in the CPH Pediatrics Practice in the E. J. Noble Professional Building at 80 E. Main Street in Canton.

Smith is trained to follow children and adolescents through developmental stages, observing and screening for developmental delays, problems relating to the development of the bones and muscles, nutrition and eating disorders, endocrine disorders such as growth hormone deficiency or diabetes, and behavioral issues. She also offers vaccinations and sports physicals.

Dr. Smith received her medical degree from New York Medical College, graduating as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. During this time, she was an active member and treasurer of the American Medical Association and American Medical Women’s Associations.

While obtaining her degree, Smith participated in a clinical research project on bronchopulmonary dysplasia at the regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Westchester Medical Center. She also organized an independent elective in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Upstate Galisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse that would later become an official elective rotation for fourth-year medical students.

Smith completed her residency in pediatrics at Upstate Galisano where she served as a member of the ICAP (Improving Community Acquired Pneumonia) Quality Improvement Committee aiming to improve evidence-based management of community acquired pneumonia. While completing her residency, she also volunteered at the independent, resident-run, pediatric walk-in clinic providing medical care to Native Americans on the Onondaga Nation Reservation.

Prior to completing her medical degree, she completed volunteer work at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Children’s Medical Center and Horizon for Homeless Children in Worcester, Mass., as well as at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology and biotechnology, with a minor in engineering mechanics, from Worcester Polytechnic University (WPI) in Worcester, Mass.

Smith is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is certified in Pediatric Advance Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
