New record lows set in Canton, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur, Star Lake; negative temps in the forecast for most of week

New record low temperatures were set in Canton and Ogdensburg last night as lows dropped to -23, according to Weather Underground.

The cold temps last night broke the previous record of -21 which was recorded in 1979 at the Massena International Airport.

Gouverneur and Star Lake shattered their record by 11 degrees as -20 temps were recorded yesterday at KGTB Wheeler-Sack International Airport in Fort Drum, which is the nearest National Weather Service recording station for the southern portion of the county.

The previous record was -9 in 1997, according to Weather Underground.

Potsdam and Massena also experienced -23 temps but that did not break the previous record of -29 in 1973, Weather Underground.

The average high for this time of year in St. Lawrence County is 29 and the average low is about 7 or 8, the service says.

The cold temps continue today with wind chill values as low as -28 and a high of 11, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The low overnight will be around -1 with a wind chill of -11, NWS says.

Things will continue to be cold through the weekend with highs expected to be around 18 on Saturday and Sunday.

The forecast for the week is as follows:

Tonight Cloudy, with a low around -1. Wind chill values as low as -11. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph.

Wednesday A 40 percent chance of snow showers, mainly after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 15. Wind chill values as low as -13. Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Wednesday Night A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around -6. Wind chill values as low as -20. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy and cold, with a high near 6. West wind 10 to 13 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around -11. West wind around 11 mph.

Friday Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 4. West wind around 10 mph.

Friday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around -5. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Saturday A 40 percent chance of light snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 18. South wind around 9 mph.

Saturday Night A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph.

Sunday A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 17. Light southwest wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

Sunday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around -10. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph.

Monday Mostly sunny, with a high near 11. West wind around 8 mph.
