New push by state aimed at increasing business for ski tourism in North Country

The latter part of the ski season was good in the North Country, and tourist interests are hoping Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s initiatives aimed at bolstering ski tourism in the Adirondacks and elsewhere around the state will make an impression on winter sports lovers.

Cuomo proposes giving millions to the “I Love NY” advertising campaign, and is promoting the rest of this month as “Ski NY Spring Break,” to encourage people to take to one of New York’s 52 ski areas.

The ski promotion is being marketed through www.iskiny.com, where people can download a coupon for 25 percent off equipment rental, lessons and lift ticket packages, Cuomo said.

For the 2015-16 winter season, the state and the Ski Association of New York will offer “Discover NY” ski day and “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month” promotions. “Discover NY” ski day will feature discounted skiing at $14 and $25 for a lift ticket, based on ski area size, as well as “learn to ski” discount packages of $25 to $35 for lift tickets, equipment rentals and lessons. In the past, this event has attracted 15,000 skiers, according to Cuomo.

In addition to that, the “I Shop NY” initiative, a partnership with the Retail Council of New York will promote New York-based stores and businesses to Canada and boost the state’s economy. The event will take place March 22 to April 6.

The council has coordinated nearly 200 stores to offer deals as part of the event, Cuomo said. They offer coupons at www.ILOVENY.com/ishopny

Meanwhile, Cuomo’s office says the governor is including in his 2015-16 budget proposal $25 million for the “I Love NY” advertising campaign.

About $5 million of that will promote the Adirondacks, Cuomo said.
