New Ogdensburg shipping and receiving store, ‘Boxes Without Borders,’ hopes to capture Canadian market

OGDENSBURG -- Hoping to grab a share of the Canadian market, a shipping and receiving store, Boxes Without Borders, will open this summer in the Paterson Street strip mall.

Connie and Alexandra Augsbury, owners of the New Media Outpost, which is also located in the plaza, are hoping to help Canadian shoppers with their shipping needs.

Alex Augsbury said Canadian shoppers often like to purchase items online from American stores, but in many cases the shipping is cost prohibitive.

She said many Canadians in border towns are interested in having items shipped to American locations to transport in their own vehicles.

"We will basically allow Canadians to ship things to our store and we hold on to them for a small fee," she said.

The service is similar to a post office box, except packages from shipping agencies like UPS and Fed-Ex can also be shipped to the location.

Augsbury said the store will include a dressing room for customers who want to try their products on before heading home. She said the store will also assist with returns, which can be confusing.

"It's something we've been counseled on by locals and various Canadian customers who ship stuff to America," she said. "We know there is a market for it and we just want to improve on it."

Augsbury said the UPS store in Ogdensburg offers similar services, but Boxes Without Borders plans to focus exclusively on the shipping destination end.

"We are trying to offer the service in a nice organized way,” she said. “We will also have Wi-Fi access for customers who are waiting."

Augsbury said the store will likely staff two employees at opening, with future hires possible.

She said an opening date has not been set as she and her mother Connie are still for the approval of name.

"We are hoping to open this summer."

The 2,000 square foot building space is located in the former New Video News, next to the New Media Outpost.
