CANTON – The New Horizons Band will be inaugurating the new Eleanor Burke Memorial Pavilion at United Helpers Maplewood Campus with a concert Friday at 1 p.m.

The pavilion, between Maplewood and Partridge Run Golf and Country Club on Sullivan Drive, was formally dedicated last week with Maplewood staff and members of the Burke family in attendance.

Eleanor Burke passed away in May 2010 after a battle with cancer. She was a registered nurse and an employee at Maplewood who is remembered for her support of her co-workers and willingness to help those in need. It is those traits and many others that led employees to raise more than $50,000 for the pavilion project and to dedicate it in her name.

“Eleanor Burke was someone who would pitch in and help, no matter what and expect no reward or recognition,” said Bernie Bezio, one of Burke’s co-workers. “She was one of those people who took great pride in her work with all of the residents. She considered them family. She was a caring woman who lived each day sharing her compassion for others and we miss her.”

Staff, residents, family members, and the community all pitched in and raised the funds for the pavilion.

The dedication ceremony is just the first event that the pavilion was to host. The Friday afternoon community concert is another.

It is the employees’ hope that the pavilion will provide a location for family picnics, concerts and other activities designed to enhance the lives of others, particularly the residents of Maplewood Campus and Partridge Knoll.

“This pavilion is a marvelous example of community cooperation,” said Kay Briggs, a Maplewood resident.

“It is just another example of how teamwork can produce amazing outcomes,” said Kimberly McFaddin, administrator. “This is exactly the kind of project that Eleanor herself would have been involved with.”
