HOPKINTON -- A new Dollar General will soon be open on State Highway 11B.
Work is underway to build the new Dollar General store, which has recently opened locations in Winthrop, Norwood and Waddington. The brand has about a dozen stores in St. Lawrence County.
The retail outlet will be built next to Lamphere’s Market, 2798 State Highway 11B, according to Town Supervisor Susan Wood.
Wood says Dollar General officials approached the town code enforcement officer for the proper permits and were granted them last fall.
Wood said there is no zoning in Hopkinton, which is why the town board was not involved in the process.
Code enforcement officer Allen Fukes was not available for comment.
Wood said she believed the plan was for the store to open around June 1.
Other than Lamphere’s Market, local residents can shop at Twin Pines Quick Stop near Nicholville, or venture to Malone, Potsdam or Massena.
“This is a good thing for Hopkinton citizens and it gives another opportunity to spend money locally,” she said.
