POTSDAM – A Madrid mother and her three children will open a new chocolate and old-fashioned candy shop in Potsdam.

Main Street Chocolates is set to open Nov. 13, at 4, Main St. Jennifer Murphy, the owner, says the shop will feature “nostalgic” candies, gummies, taffies and chocolates. She said it will also offer a wide variety of “dipped goods” ranging from suckers and pretzels to chocolate-dunked bacon.

Murphy said she has wanted to start a family business with help from her children Nicholas, 13, Lucas, 8, and Kelia Searcy, 11.

Especially excited about the new store is Kelia, who says she wants to be Mrs. Willy Wonka, as well as a veterinarian.

Kelia says she will be helping her mother with store and would also like to incorporate children’s activities into the business. She said she plans to become a baby sitter and would like to read to children at the store.

Murphy said all of the children will be helping at the shop and she is planning a grand opening event for Nov. 30.

Kelia says she is hoping to spread the word the word of the new candy store as far as she can.

“Tell all the kids in New York State to get their quarters ready for the candy,” she said.

Kelia said the store will also offer special chocolate bars named after herself and her brothers.

“Mine is a ‘nutter-butter’ dipped in chocolate,” she said.

The store will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 to 7 p.m.
