POTSDAM -- Jorge C. Grillo has moved from Bermuda to be Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s new chief information officer.
CIO Grillo will serve as a member of the senior leadership team and be responsible for the hospital’s information technology infrastructure and implementation of a new electronic records system.
The “electronic medical record,” or EMR, a program with a roughly $2 million price tag, is expected to provide better coordinated care and a smoother experience for patients, with improved processes and a higher degree of patient safety. It will also align the hospital with federal mandates for electronic health records.
Formerly CIO of the Island of Bermuda’s Hospital System, Grillo supported two hospitals and three outpatient facilities with a patient population of approximately 70,000. He was responsible for information technology, medical records, decision support, laboratory services, and diagnostic imaging for the island’s hospitals. He also was a consultant to the provider side of the Bermuda government, including the Department of Social Insurance and the Ministry of Health.
Prior to joining the Bermuda Hospital System, Grillo was director of information technology services for Asante Health System, a 400-bed system in Medford, Oregon.
“Jorge’s experience in healthcare, government, and industry will serve us well as we transition to an electronic medical record,” said David B. Acker, President and CEO of Canton-Potsdam Hospital. “He also brings operations process analysis experience and an understanding of IT governance that can help us realize efficiencies in our operations,” he said.
Grillo got a degree in healthcare administration and an MBA in healthcare administration from South University in Philadelphia, Pa. He received several commendations for service in the U.S. Army, including the Commanders’ Award for Public Service, 7th Army, and was a recipient of the Al Gore Vice Presidential Award for Reinventing Government.
