The latest data from the U.S. Census show that St. Lawrence County households heat much more with wood than the average county in New York State, and that median household income is much lower in the county than the state average.
The St. Lawrence County Planning Office has extracted some interesting facts from recently released data from the American Community Survey five-year estimates, 2008-12, for every town, village and Census Designated Place (CPD) in the country.
Among the things revealed in these estimates:
• The median age in St. Lawrence County matches the national figure (37.2 years). This is slightly younger than the NYS figure (38.0 years).
• There are more men than women in St. Lawrence County (50.9% vs. 49.1%). In both NYS and the U.S. as a whole, females outnumbered males.
• Single-family detached homes made up 69.7% of all housing units in St. Lawrence County. By contrast, in NYS these units made up only 42.1% of housing stock.
• Over 50% of housing units in St. Lawrence County were constructed before 1960. For the U.S. as a whole, half of all housing units were constructed before 1980.
• In St. Lawrence County, 14.0% of housing units were heated with wood. Only 2.0% of units across the state heated this way.
• Median household income in St. Lawrence County ($43,745) was much lower than for the State as a whole ($57,683).
• Poverty in St. Lawrence County (18.5%) was much higher than for NYS (14.9%).

American Community Survey (ACS) estimates replace the traditional Census long-form data. Long-form data were based on a sample of Census respondents; data were reported once per decade. The ACS replaces the long-form process with a smaller sample size, but data are collected every month throughout the ten-year period. Therefore, data can be updated on a regular basis. The recent release of data for our towns and villages is the most current data available.
