NORFOLK – The Norfolk Racquette River Campground has opened at 8485 State Rt. 56.
Owner Ernest McGregor says the campground, with about 22 campsites open and about 25 more on the way, is registered with the state Department of Health.
Most sites have electric, water and sewer hookups, and can be rented by the day, week, or for the season.
“This is a new experience for me,” said McGregor, who is a semi-retired construction, plumbing, heating and electric contractor. He said he bought the land a few years ago with campsites in mind.
The campground is right on the Raquette River with a boat launch, “and good fishing, boating and kayaking.” And there’s a hiking trail along the river.
Campers who don’t want to move their camp vehicles can leave them there year-round for $900 per year, plus electric. “They can build porches if they want to” at those semi-permanent installations, he said.
